Whether you are installing metal roofing or any type of roof for your home, cleaning the gutters is a task that must be done. But this is not one of the most looked forward to duties that we as homeowners like to perform. In fact many of us will refer to it as a chore and keep bumping back the cleaning until it absolutely has to be done, even though we know that regular maintenance helps to keep the water moving freely through the gutters. There are however several gutter cleaning tools on the market that can help you get this chore done more quickly so you can get on to more pleasurable duties.
One of the best investments you can make if you live around lots of leaf dropping trees is purchasing leaf guard gutters. These wildly popular inventions go right over the gutters keeping larger debris such as fallen leaves or small twigs and branches from ever winding up in the gutter in the first place. Most of leaf guard gutters look like a metal screening with large enough holes to allow the water to move freely while keeping out the larger debris.
They are easy to find online or at your local home improvement stores. They range from the very simple to the more expensive and more involved installation. The simple ones are generally sold in about three foot lengths and are just set right on the gutter itself. The other leaf guards can be screwed into place and have hinges to raise or lower them as need be. Having these installed does not mean that there is still not work to be done to keep your gutters properly maintained.
Other gutter cleaning tools that you are going to need on hand are a ladder, preferable one that is at least 2 feet taller than gutters themselves so you do not have to stand on the top rung as a safety precaution. You will also need a means to remove the pollen and dirt that can build up in the gutter and if you don't have leaf guard gutters you are going to need something to remove the decaying leaves from the gutters.
To remove the leaves many homeowners recommend a gutter grabber. These are shovel shaped tools that are on the end of an extension pole. You use the device to scoop up the debris and bring it back to you so you can bag it properly. These are handy tools because the extension pole gives you the ability to work further in both directions then just your arm span which means fewer trips up and down the ladder. Another popular tool used are the gutter wands, these gutter cleaning tools are added to your garden hose and then use compression to give you a jet spray to help clean your gutter thoroughly.
Even though most of us don't enjoy the task of cleaning our gutters we know that it is a necessary part of our home maintenance routine. By implementing a few of these gutter cleaning tools you can make the job less messy and you will get it done much quicker.
